3.1
In Poland, every year we can observe a growth of interest of the general public in the reconstruction of historical events in the open. Besides being a very entertaining way of spending a free time it is a great way to learn history.

There is a number of societies or reconstruction groups being established to promote Polish History – the Warsaw Uprising Reconstruction Group, The Battle of Grunwald 1410 or the Vistula Miracle of 1920 to name a few.

Last year I took part in such event which was part of the celebrations of Days of Grunwald. It brought together fans of historical recreation and was one of the largest event reconstructed by the "historical" circles in Poland. The purpose of this meeting was to promote history, culture, traditions and ancient crafts.

The main point of the meeting was a battle on the anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald. More than 1400 knights entered the field to take part in the largest outdoor staging of a medieval battle in Poland. And all this is happened in front of more than 100 thousand fans of medieval times from all around the world (Germany, Italy, France, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and even the United States).

Of course whenever there are so many people involved, there must be special safety regulation introduced – all the participants had to sign the Set of Rules Document concerning the use of arms and gunpowder, drinking alcohol prohibition and many other regulations. All this to be sure that all the participants and spectators are safe.

3.2
Horse-racing has always been of great interest to me although I have never tried it myself. I do not know if it is the fear that something bad might happen or I am not just strong enough to pursue such a passion. However, last year my friends and I went to Warsaw, to Służewiec which is a home to the most famous horse-racing tracks in Poland .
The day was warm and sunny and nothing portended the future tragedy. When we got to Słuzewiec early in the morning, people were already gathering at the entrance gate. I wanted to get the seats at the front row but these had been sold out. When we finally managed to get to the grandstand, the view was breathtaking. Suddenly there was a gong and everyone rushed to their seats. The race started and people got really elated, especially those who wanted to win their bets. All of a sudden we all heard an almighty noise. The horses got scared and the racetrack was in a complete disarray. We were told that some jockeys got injured, two of them were taken to the hospital. As it turned out, a 6-year-old wanted to see what would happen if the horses heard the firecracker go off. Later he said he wanted to do it after the race but the firecrackers fell off his pocket and people who were passing by stepped on them accidentally. Eventually, the race was cancelled but fortunately no one was killed.

3.2
Last week we decided to go and watch local WRC rally competition. Usually, such events take place on closed roads where drivers and their pilots race to get the best time. This time, however, this was pure off-road challenge. Teams were to race along a road in the local woods. There were a lot of people positioned along the track – some where there to support their favorites, some wanted to watch cars speeding through the forest and some came to take amazing pictures.
First car came suddenly from behind a left turn at incredible speed. Its engine roaring, the car skidded at the turn. Its wheels were throwing fountains of dirt high up in the air, covering people who stood too close to the track.
After the car passed, one of the photographers I noticed before came closer to the track in order, I think, to get a better shooting place. He set up his tripod firmly on the ground and waited for the next team.
What he did not think about was that each passing car produced tremendous amount of noise and ground vibration. When the next car arrived, the poor photographer has lost his balance on the shaky ground and collapsed to the track. Had it not been for the amazing skills of the driver, the car would have hit the man.
In the end all ended well, but the man’s lack of imagination might have proven fatal both to him and the racing team.




3.3
Recent debates in the world of Polish educational policy, concerning the issue of decreased number of history classes in schools, show us that it is not that easy to decide whether school curriculum should be altered in any way.
While some schools are very conservative in their approach, many do allow their pupils to decide which subjects they take in their final grade, thus allowing them to have more direct influence on their future education.
Such approach has its pros and cons, obviously. Clear advantage of such solution is that those pupils who have decided which faculty they want to study at a university do not have to devote time and effort to those subjects which will not benefit them in the future. This way, young people may focus on those subjects that will be continued, in a way, after they graduate from secondary school.
A counter-argument to this notion is that such approach will result in decreased general knowledge of graduates. While this idea has its merit, we need to consider the wider picture. While in the final grade, pupils should prepare for the maturity exam, which opens door to higher education. Thus, focusing on those subjects that will be taken on the exam, may only prove beneficial to them.
Concluding, while supporters of both approaches have their points, it seems that allowing such practices may prove to be more beneficial for pupils whose biggest concern at this stage of education is to be admitted to the university.
